Hi Reader,
This week’s newsletter theme is the State of Innovation in the Home Construction Industry.
The 2025 Pacific Coast Builders Conference (PCBC 2025) demonstrated that builders are open to innovation and change. The event's theme, Dare to be Different, was a capitulation that the old way of building homes will not sustain the industry.
Change — in the form of collaboration and adopting innovative technologies, materials, and methods — is necessary to survive.
Enter entrepreneurs, builders, technologists, suppliers, researchers, marketers, exhibitors, keynote speakers, and other industry experts to demonstrate that progress, collaborative risk-taking and innovative products have arrived to help ameliorate a myriad of residential construction's most glaring challenges.
Borrowing from the success of other highly adaptable sectors, such as automotive and consumer electronics, construction will need to adjust fluidly to shifts in consumer demand and changing economic conditions.
Many of the challenges and trends that face the industry are not going away. Labor shortages, a dearth of skilled craftspeople, defragmentation of the regulatory environment, and rising material costs, can only be addressed with innovation, especially in terms of technology and creative ways of thinking.
This year’s PCBC, along with the co-located Pitchfest 2025 — both held in Anaheim last week — are proof that the old guard and a new generation of innovative minds must work together to meet the under supply of housing that has a stranglehold on affordability.
Everyone — homeowners and industry professionals, alike — can help bring about innovative change by encouraging members of younger generations to explore the following:
- Pursue a career in the trades
- Apply their technological skills and aptitude to housing challenges
- Bring creative, entrepreneurial problem-solving to the trades, or
- All of the above!
Two secrets of the trade professions you'll want to share are:
- Job satisfaction levels are exceptionally high
- Many trade professions are naturally immune to being replaced by AI
Funneling new minds and energy into the trade professions will help ensure that everyone, who wishes to be a homeowner, will have a viable chance of fulfilling this valuable dream!
