Prepping Your Home & Garden for Winter

November 9, 2024

Hi Reader,

As autumn transitions to winter, so also comes severe weather that can affect the comfort and beauty of your home and surrounding landscaping.

This week's newsletter focuses on Winter Preparation of your home and garden, even if you live in a 9, 10 or 11 plant hardiness zone.

Ensuring that your home and outdoor areas are protected and well-insulated against nature's fury, be it snow, frost or heavy rain, should be at the top of your current "To Do" list.

Frost, ice and rain can wreak havoc on your home and property, but damage, discomfort and inconvenience can all be avoided by simply devoting time to careful preparation, well ahead of the onset of inclement weather.

In particular, now is good time to have any key, older systems in your home (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or roofing) proactively inspected to ward off any unanticipated winter-related incidents.

If you do uncover any issues that need addressing, you can be grateful that you are not facing one of the following "insult to injury" scenarios:

  1. Living in discomfort
  2. Waiting for a quality contractor to be available
  3. Hiring a disreputable, inexperienced, or poorly-skilled contractor out of desperation

PS: Last week's newsletter can be found here.

A-M Gutter Guard
5" Heavy-Duty Aluminum Gutter Guard

A-M Gutter Guard was designed by two Amish brothers, Ray and Aden Miller in northeast Ohio. After several years of installing various types of gutter guards, they were motivated to develop a gutter guard that would address issues with existing products. It was clear that affordable guards were poorly designed and well-made guards were overpriced. With that in mind, they designed and patented A-M Gutter Guard selling over 15 million feet to date!

The Snow Shaker by Screwups

Heavy snow can weigh down branches and cause them to snap, leading to costly tree repairs and dangerous property damage. The Snow Shaker is a simple solution that’s easy to set up and fun to use. Just attach the device to any standard extension pole or broom/mop handle and you're ready to dislodge perilous snow from your tree’s branches! (It's also convenient for hanging Christmas lights, as well as shaking fruit and nuts loose during warmer months).
