Hi Reader,
This week’s newsletter is a natural next chapter to our ongoing coverage of resilience, rebuilding, and the future of homes in an era of increasing challenges and opportunities. The topic is one we have been looking forward to writing about for some time:
It was at Werkwell's (re)Building with Resilience Symposium where we first encountered Tal Karasso, CEO of Lytemods. His presentation stopped us in our tracks. Karasso's company builds hybrid modular ADUs using Light Gauge Steel framing. One of their structures did something remarkable during last year’s LA Fires:
An LGS-framed ADU, built by Lytemods, not only survived the Eaton Fire in Altadena, but helped protect several adjacent homes, becoming what we later coined the Accidental Firebreak of Altadena.
Wanting to learn more, we immediately followed up with Karasso—visiting his Altadena rebuild project, where he is now constructing the main residence for the same client whose ADU became that accidental firebreak.
What we discovered in that visit, combined with background research, resulted in what we believe is one of the most comprehensive and practical guides to Light Gauge Steel framing published for an American audience of homeowners and residential builders.
In an era where resilience has become a top priority, increasing numbers of homeowners and builders are actively seeking better ways to build.
As one Lytemods client put it with disarming simplicity:
"If I am rebuilding anyway, why rebuild with the same vulnerabilities?"
That question is the beating heart of this week's feature. Whether you are a homeowner navigating a rebuild, a builder reconsidering your material choices, or simply someone who wants to understand where residential construction is headed—this article was written for you.
What you will find inside the LGS article:
- What Light Gauge Steel actually is—and why it is gaining serious momentum globally
- The real cost comparison between LGS and wood framing—including impressive insurance savings
- The full Altadena case study, including our on-site visit with Karasso
- Practical guidance on hiring the right LGS contractor and navigating permitting
- A breakdown of the LGS technology ecosystem driving this transformation
The Accidental Firebreak of Altadena changed the way we think about resilience. We hope it might change yours too.
