Redefining Luxury as Legacy
March 15, 2026
Hi Reader,
For centuries, homes weren’t just addresses—they were legacies. People named them. They built them with the expectation that generations would grow within their walls, passing down stories, values, and strong family roots that endured.
A well-made home had good bones:
thoughtful craftsmanship, enduring materials, and a sense that it would stand not just for today, but for centuries to come.
Today, the idea of a legacy home is being rediscovered. Luxury is no longer defined only by finishes, square footage, or "shiny ephemeral technology"—it’s about building something that protects and lasts:
- A home designed with resilience, adaptability, and comfort at its core.
- A home that supports families across generations.
Advances in technology and materials are no longer reserved for the highest price points—they are moving across every tier of housing. Smart systems, durable materials, and thoughtful design are making it possible for more homes to be stronger, more efficient, and more responsive partners to the people who live within them. In short:
the modern home is being redefined.
At a recent industry panel—aptly titled "Redefining Luxury"—we learned that post-2025 LA Fires, affluent homeowners have been asking very specific questions pertaining to safety and permanence:
- Will my home still function during a grid outage?
- Can it survive exposure to wildfire?
- Will insurance companies still insure it?
At the 2026 New American Home, this shift was on full display, as well, with an added layer of philanthropic legacy building from its owner, Jason Eichenholz, founder of Jonathan’s Landing Foundation:
"We are building Jonathan's Landing to solve for the number one fear for every family that has a child or sibling with autism: What happens to my child after I'm gone?"
The homes and ideas showcased in this edition represent a confluence of innovation: spaces designed not just to meet today’s needs, but to serve the next generation. Homes that adapt, endure, and support the evolving rhythms of life.
In many ways, we’re returning to an old idea—building homes with strong bones and a long view of the future. But this time, we’re doing it with improved tools, technologies, and a reinvigorated imagination to ensure that the homes we create today will still matter tomorrow.
