Hi Reader,
This week’s newsletter explores the grandeur of experience in Hospitality Design and its relationship to residential living.
Having recently attended the Hospitality Expo + Conference (HD Expo) in Las Vegas, we learned about issues the industry must address in order to stay relevant, competitive and profitable. Additionally, we browsed the show floor to learn about memorable products that help create the sense of opulent escapism that one usually finds only during travel.
Purgula’s main goal at the conference was to gain a better understanding of the underlying factors that make luxury hospitality consistently unique and unforgettable. Specifically, we were interested in finding tangible examples of “delight” that are also well-suited for home living.
We confirmed that there is a blurry overlap between hospitality and residential design. Though understandably, hospitality designers are quite influential in setting impactful trends, the residential space meets some of the same needs that travelers require in their hospitality space, that is:
feeling comfortably “at home” when “away from home”.
A few of the more interesting trends and perceptions we uncovered include:
- The obsession many hospitality designers have with “experience”, as in, how customers feel within spaces
- The application of science for making design choices to better understand emotional and physical reactions to discrete design variables, such as colors and materials. Phillips Collection, for instance, has been partnering with Science in Design for this exact need.
- The importance and predominance of innovative wall coverings in hospitality spaces, including in guest rooms, which will definitely flow into the residential sector.
Also included in this newsletter are some previous articles that will help homeowners elevate their “design for comfort” plan, with the goal of creating their personal hospitality experience.
