Hi Reader,
Being an innovative homeowner is the focus of this week’s newsletter.
Our most recent article —the benefits of as-built drawings — got us thinking about how valuable these drawings are for homeowners to understand and manage their homes adeptly.
As-built drawings represent a key step towards creating a conceptual digital twin of your home. If you are unfamiliar with the concept of a residential digital twin, think of it as an interactive 3D model that contains all the information, data and performance metrics on EVERYTHING you would want to know about your home.
When we say “everything” – we mean “everything”: warranties; product models; serial numbers; paint types and colors; dimensions; material types; maintenance records; usage documentation and instructional videos; contractor contact information; insurance policies; property tax records; utility bills; etc.
In the “analog” era, this type of information would be kept in a hardcopy notebook that was referred to as a “home binder”.
Though the reality of having a robust, perfectly functioning digital twin of your home may still be years away, all homeowners should manage their homes with this aspirational goal in mind — starting with as-built drawings and a “digital binder” of their home.
That said, the two most important traits to possess as an innovative homeowner is that of an insatiable learner and a tenacious problem-solver.
No matter how you may perceive yourself as a homeowner, learning opportunities abound that will empower you!
