A Homeowner’s Guide to Lighting

Hi Reader,

Quick question:

What's the difference between a "lamp" and a "portable"?

If you guessed that a lamp is the thing on your nightstand, you're actually using homeowner vocabulary, not trade terminology—in the lighting industry, a "lamp" is technically the bulb, and the object you'd call a lamp is called a "portable." It's a small thing, but it's a good example of why lighting conversations with a contractor or electrician can go sideways quickly.

That's exactly why we recently attended a Continuing Education Unit (CEU) session at the Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles—"The Language of Lighting: Light Sources & Finding the Perfect Fit," presented by Jack Inman, Showroom Manager at Palecek. There was enough valuable material that we split our recap into two companion pieces, aimed at demystifying lighting and giving you a shared vocabulary with your contractor, electrician, and designer.

Part I: A Homeowner's Guide to Lighting covers the fundamentals: the three core functions of light (Ambient, Task, Accent); how to read a lumen and CRI rating; why Watts don't mean what they used to; and how color temperature shapes the way a room feels. You don't need to be an electrical engineer to apply any of this information—you just need a sufficient grasp of lighting language to ask better questions and understand the answers to achieve your ultimate objectives.

Part II: Lighting Your Home, Room by Room is where that language gets applied—the placement, scale, and hanging guidance for the spaces that ask the most of a lighting plan:

  • The Dining Table: Fixtures should generally hang 30 to 36 inches above the surface—low enough for intimacy, high enough to stay out of sightlines.
  • The Kitchen Island: Multiple pendants spaced 24 to 30 inches apart give you even task light without dead zones between them.
  • The Bathroom Vanity: A single downlight overhead casts shadows under the eyes and chin—sconces flanking the mirror solve it.
  • The Bathtub Oasis: A code-driven clearance standard for hanging fixtures near a tub, rooted in electrical safety rather than style.

Most people know instinctively when the lighting in a room feels right, but few know how that feeling gets engineered behind the scenes. Here's to making lighting feel more intuitive and lucid. Fiat Lux.

Be Inspired by the Language of Lighting

Since our companion guides were inspired by The Language of Lighting, presented by Jack Inman of Palecek at the Pacific Design Center, we encourage you to explore Palecek's collection of lighting, furniture, and home furnishings. They've been bringing natural materials and artisan craftsmanship to high-end design for over five decades.

We're especially drawn to their lighting line, which perfectly delivers on Inman's stellar advice: “Make sure your light fixtures look as beautiful off as they do on.” Instead of simply filling a room with light, Palecek fixtures use materials like woven cane and hand-sewn coco beads to function as sculptural art by day while casting warm light and dramatic shadows by night.
